Eagle is currently seeking a Database Administrator. This is a twenty-four (14) month, contract position scheduled to start in April.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Installing, configuring and maintaining all supported DBMS software including Oracle Database and Microsoft SQL server for a high availability environment;
  • Upgrading existing databases such as from MS SQL server 2008 to 2016, or Oracle 11g to 12c;
  • Patching existing database based on venders’ recommendation;
  • Monitoring all databases with monitoring tools such as EMGrid, Heroix or SCOM;
  • Configuring monitor criteria and notifications;
  • Leading resolution of database-related technical issues including leading and coordinating database recovery in the event of a system failure;
  • Implementing and reviewing backup and recovery strategy to ensure that business service-level agreements are met;
  • Ensuring optimization of resource usage to increase throughput and minimize contention; 
  • Tuning the operating system, network and transaction processors to work with the DBMS;
  • Ensuring appropriate storage for the relational database management system (RDBMS);
  • Enabling the DBMS to work with storage devices and storage management software such as storage area network (SAN) technology;
  • Interfacing with any other technologies required by applications; 
  • Conducting database security administration to ensure that data are available only to authorized users;
  • Working with data modelers to build database schema, tables, procedures and permissions; 
  • Ensuring data consistency by adhering to data model standards and best practices; 
  • Managing schema objects and performing production migrations;
  • Administering database networking such as Oracle Net, Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol and User Datagram Protocol;
  • Carrying out database performance tuning and analysis;
  • Analyzing and monitoring system performance to identify major performance bottlenecks in the system and identify the impact of administration tasks on core business scenarios;
  • Initiating and participating in studies and exploratory analyses on database technology evolution and strategic opportunities;
  • Providing long-term strategic thinking and analysis to ensure proper capacity planning;
  • Providing recommendations and decisions within architectural standards for development activities related to area of expertise; 
  • Identifying, monitoring and documenting technology-specific database standards;
  • Participating in knowledge sharing and training of employees; 
  • Collaborating with development DBAs to coordinate database migration activities and disaster recovery testing, and enhance disaster recovery procedures; and,
  • Providing on-call support on a rotational basis.

Skills and Qualifications

The qualified candidate must have:

  • University degree or college diploma in computer science or equivalent;
  • Five (5) years’ experience within the last seven (7) years, as a Database Administrator for Oracle version 11g or higher and SQL server 2008 or higher;
  • Three (3) years of experience participating in projects ranging from six months to three years in duration;
  • Demonstrated experience with implementation of Oracle Database and Data Guard software in a production Unix environment, including database connectivity and other third-party vendor solutions;
  • Demonstrated experience creating and editing stored procedures; 
  • Knowledge of Microsoft SQL mirroring and clustering, SUN cluster;
  • Knowledge of Lean and Agile development methodologies;
  • Ability to work on call, work on multiple concurrent projects, support high-visibility applications, organize workload to accommodate changing priorities while still meeting deadlines, maintaining a high level of accuracy and ensuring proper follow-through; and,
  • Bilingualism with French (an asset).
